General Description
Adanced electronic
technology has made electromechanical reduce-voltage starters and dual-wound
motors obsolete. Graseby Controls has become a leader in the innovative
and durable design of digital AC motor controls. SUPERSTART continues this
tradition of engineering excellence that recognizes the needs of industry.
SUPERSTART digital reduced-voltage starters limit motor strating current
to provide smooth and stepless motor acceleration to full speed. This limits
current in-rush and eliminates starting shock to mechanical couplings and
gears. Starting current (torque) is fully operator-adjustable. Motor protection
is provided by a sophisticatedelectronic overload cicuit, with complete
diagnostic status of the strter shown on an LCD display. A current-optimizing
cicuit operates under no-load or lightly loaded conditions to reduce current
demand. Models cover the range from 10 to 1000HP, up to 690V.
Principles of Operation
SUPERSTART provides
smooth, stepless acceleration by phase-controlling three sets of inverse
parallel SCRs connected in a three-phase switch configuration. The unit
controls three-phase voltage and current to the motor by varying the portion
of the three-phase sine wave conducted by each SCR.
Three-phase current sensing is used for overload sensing and as the
feedback signal necessary for stable control of the "current ramp"
mand "current limit" starting mods (both standard). This allows
a choice of either current ramp or current limit starting, depending on
application requirements. The current-optimizing circuit can be activated
following starting. It controls motor voltage to reduce reactive current
and power.
